The West Northamptonshire Local Plan is the key planning document being prepared by West Northamptonshire Council to guide development in the area.

The plan sets out how West Northamptonshire will grow and develop up to 2043, including:

  • Where new homes will be built
  • Locations for jobs and business growth
  • Transport and infrastructure planning
  • Protection of green spaces and environment

It will replace existing plans covering Northampton, Daventry, and South Northamptonshire.

A draft “Regulation 18” consultation is running.  Closes  27 March 2026

Public feedback from this stage will shape the next version

Next steps:

Regulation 19 consultation: expected Autumn 2026

Submission for examination: by end of 2026

The emerging plan covers:

Housing & growth

Long-term strategy for housing delivery (linked to government targets)

Identification of sites for new development

Economy & jobs

Land for employment and business growth

Regeneration of town centres (e.g. Northampton)

Infrastructure

Roads, transport, schools, healthcare

Developer contributions for services

Environment & sustainability

Protection of green spaces

Policies on climate, health, and wellbeing

Support for brownfield development and regeneration

The Local Plan is legally important because it:

Determines whether planning applications are approved or refused

Directs where development should and shouldn’t happen

Helps secure infrastructure funding alongside growth
