Digital Landline Switchover – Important Information for Residents
The UK’s traditional analogue phone network (PSTN) is being switched off nationally by 31 January 2027 and replaced with digital phone services using broadband connections.
Most residents do not need to take immediate action until contacted by their phone provider, who must give at least four weeks’ notice before any change takes place.
What Residents Should Do
Please check any devices connected to your landline, including:
- Medical alarms or telecare pendants
- Burglar alarms and CCTV systems
- Fax machines and door entry systems
If you use any of these services, contact the supplier or manufacturer to confirm they are compatible with digital phone lines.
Power Cuts and Emergency Calls
Unlike older analogue phones, digital phone services may not work during a power cut unless a backup battery is provided. Residents who:
- rely on a landline in an emergency,
- have poor mobile signal, or
- use telecare equipment
should contact their provider to discuss available backup solutions.
Support for Vulnerable Residents
Residents who are elderly, vulnerable, or use medical alert systems should ensure they are registered with their phone provider’s Priority Services Register. Providers can offer additional support, including engineer visits and battery backup equipment where required.
Local Information for Holcot
West Northamptonshire Council has already upgraded council-provided Lifeline alarm equipment to digital-compatible systems. Residents with private alarms or monitoring systems should still check directly with their supplier.
Beware of Scams
Please be cautious of unexpected phone calls asking for payment or personal information relating to the switchover. Genuine providers normally contact customers by letter and do not request upfront payment for standard migration.
