WNC Highways – Update from Annual Council Meeting
WNC - Pothole Response and FixMyStreet Reports
Published: 15 June 2026
Pothole Response and FixMyStreet Reports
Please accept my sincere apologies that a number of issues reported via FixMyStreet were not responded to within the expected timescales.
This delay was due to an unprecedented volume of highway defects arising over the winter period, largely as a result of prolonged adverse weather conditions. This placed significant pressure on inspection and repair resources. However, I can confirm that all reported defects have now been inspected, and any required works have either been completed or are programmed for completion.
We acknowledge the concerns regarding response times and are currently:
- Investigating reported response failures in more detail, including auditing specific cases; and
- Reviewing processes to ensure improvements in communication and timeliness moving forward.
Road Markings
Our engineers have advised that the requested white line on the approach to the chicane is possible and they will add it to the lining list.
With regard to the renewal of road markings, these are managed in accordance with the Highway Inspection Manual, which I have attached for reference. This document sets out the intervention criteria and safety-based approach used to prioritise lining works across the network.
We will also continue to:
- Clarify and communicate the road marking policy and its safety rationale; and
- Provide further guidance where requested.
Poplars Lane – Drainage / Flooding
Concerns regarding flooding at Poplars Lane have been reviewed with both our Maintenance and Drainage Teams.
I can confirm that:
- Previous attempts to clear the gullies at this location have unfortunately been unsuccessful;
- This suggests there may be a blockage or possible structural defect (such as a broken pipe) within the drainage system.
To progress this, we have:
- Arranged a further detailed investigation, including a CCTV survey, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of June.
Once the results of this investigation are available, we will be in a position to:
- Identify the root cause of the issue; and
- Develop and programme an appropriate repair scheme to restore effective drainage.
Traffic Data Survey
- The Police have advised that based on the last data set being only 12 months old they are happy that the data still provides a good indication of speeds and volumes.
Traffic Calming
- A further traffic calming feature has been requested by the Parish Council on the Holcot Road towards Brixworth, this is subject to s106 funding becoming available. Once the funding is secured and released any proposals will be shared with the Parish Council and subject to the required consultation process.
Next Steps and Ongoing Communication
We will continue to:
- Provide a direct response to Mr Burrell as requested;
- Keep the Parish Council updated as further information becomes available, particularly in relation to Poplars Lane.
We appreciate your patience and understanding while we work through these issues and remain committed to improving our service and communication.
